I think your dynamic harddisk of current virtual machine is pointing to C. That is why you are experiencing reduction of space.

In your case I would install VirtualBox on C but would create virtual machine on D.

First create a folder in D where virtual machines would be created.
Start VirtualBox software and navigate to File->Preferences. Change the Default Machine Folder to D:\<Your Folder for Virtual Machines>
This should solve the problem.
