Oracle Financials Customization 15 Years, 7 Months ago

Hi Hasan,
Why is customization necessary? Can you give me examples of a customization where functional consultants would be involved and what will be his role exactly both in R12 and 11i? Does he need to have technical abilities to participate in the process? Would he also participate in interface development?
Thanks,
Arun

Functional Consultant's Role:
Step 1: Understand business requirements (Deliverable: Business Requirement Document)
Step 2: Map business requirements to Oracle's functionality (Deliverable: Business Mapping Document)
Step 3: List gaps between business requirements and Oracle's functionality. (Deliverable: Gap Analysis Document)
Step 4: Explain functional design for the solution filling the gap. (Deliverable: Functional Design Document)
Step 5: Propose Oracle functional Setup. (Deliverable: Setup Document)
Technical Consultant's Role:
Step 1: Read functional design prepared by functional consultant and provide a technical solution. (Deliverable: Technical Design Document)
Step 2: Write custom code based on Technical Design Document and register custom code with Oracle Applications. (Deliverable: Custom Programs/Forms etc)
In ideal world the only interaction that takes place between functional and technical team is the "specifications"
I hope this helps.

Hello Hasan,
It certainly does. But I wanted some practical samples of customization - like what was the reason behind the customization, how customization helped to overcome the problem etc. When you say "the only interaction that takes place between functional and technical team is the "specifications" - what are specifications - do you mean the different columns, coulmn width, report parameters, frequency of any report etc?

Customizations are performed when existing functionality is unable to meet client's business needs.
Here is a small example.
In past the past I came accross a client whose requirement was such that they did not want users to enter journal names in the Enter Journal screen. They wanted system to automatically generate journal names based on who is entering the journal, period name, and a sequential counter (and some other criteria as well). Also they wanted the Journal Name field to be grayed out so that users cannot even navigate to that field. A "gap" was detected. Customizations were needed to fill the gap.
In this situation a functional consultant would create a document explaining what client wants from functional perspective. The document would include things like the field should be grayed out, the format for automatically generated journal names, at what point journal name would be generated (when you enter the screen or when you save the work) etc etc. The technical person would read this document and will write its own document explaining how the solution would be implemented from technical perspective. This technical design document would include things like the database sequence name and attributes, any other database objects' details if any, the name and details of the custom form (a new custom form needs to be created), details of triggers, etc etc.
I hope that helps.

Hello Hasan,
Thank you very much. This is exactly what I was looking for.
BTW it is difficult to search out something in this forum. But first of all very difficult to write the initial topic - very small space - you need to do something about this. Also, the width of the page is very narrow. We are not utlising the full width of the page. Is there any particular reason behind that?
Thanks once again,
Arun

Honestly, I have not spent much time on streamlining the forum. I just installed the software and that was pretty much it. Most of my time goes on preparing videos. I will try to take out time to see how I can improve the forum. Thanks.
